Next Day Heir

Tell me about who is in the band. Brad, drums/vocals, 23, studying to become a minister, hobbies include watching hockey, college football, and loves to go to baseball games. Mike, bass, 22, enjoys sleeping, hobbies include watching and playing sports like basketball, racquetball, and football. Shane, guitar/vocals, 22, just graduted from college w/ an Art degree in May, hobbies include painting, drawing, starwars, lifeguarding, and of course music.

How did the band get started? Shane growing up had always been a drummer, and always wanted a band, but had trouble finding guitarist's.So his senior year of high school he started playing his father's old acoustic guitar in his spare time. One day he was hanging out with some friend's and asked Brad to come by and listen to him play the guitar, and one thing led to another. They started jamming and a few hours later were ready to start a band.

(A couple years later)
Next day heir came out in late 1996, when guitarist Shane Porter and friend Casey Blount decided to start writing Christian music together. Shane at the time was involved in a secullar band Undertoe, which he played all the instruments and wrote some of the lyrics. As a side project, he decided to just have fun with it. "It basically started with me playing around on my acoustic guitar, while Casey spit out lyrics to what I would come up with it," says Shane. Shortly after, Brad Clifton, who was a drummer and old friend, began to play and write lyrics. Within about a month, Shane saw potential in this project, and decided they needed a bassist. So they recruited Mike Stinson, another old friend who Shane and Brad had been in a band with before.
"Mike had played rhythm guitar in our old band, Burlap, and I'd talked to him about possibly switching over to bass for this new project, and he decided he'd give it a try," Shane says. Now all assembled, they needed a name, after several days of headache and debate, next day heir was their choice, after seeing the phrase on a mailed package. In March of 1997, after a couple of gigs and constant frustration, Casey was no longer in the band. "It was hard, because of all the mixed emotions, but we moved on, and Casey is still a big part of this project," says Shane.
Shane recorded an album with Undertoe, and then things with them just fell apart. So now Shane could concentrate on next day heir. Throughout 1997, they played a lot of gigs, wrote songs, and became a band. Their music began to take shape, and have it's own sound. next day heir has been in the studio, and continues to play a lot of live gigs. Soon the band hopes to start work on an album, and continue to spread God's word in their music.

What is your goal as a band? The band chose Romans 8:17,the verse to represent them,it states;"Since we are his heir,we will possess the blessings he keeps for his people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him;for if we share Christ's suffering,we will also share his glory."

What style do you play? These days it's hard to put a label on any band. Although we would fall somewhere into the classic rock/early '90 seattle scene catorgy.

Where are you guys from? We're from a Lone Grove, a small town located in southern Oklahoma.

What is the music scene like in your area? There's not really a music scene, but country music still unfortunately dominates.

What bands influence your band? Our influences include Jimi Hendrix ,the Doors,Henry Rollins, and Alice in Chains.

What kind of a ministry does the band have? I would have to say a gen-x'er type ministry, we really relate well with the kids. I think our music is a great tool, and since Brad has decided to become a minister, that's another great plus!

If you had the choice, which band would you tour with? We'd love to tour with Soulfood 76 !!!

Any interesting concert experiences or funny/weird stories? Oh there are so many, at one gig we were actually broadcast live on a Country music station.

What's the wackiest thing you've ever done in concert? A cover of "the Macarena" while singing Beastie Boys lyrics!

What would you say the best part of the show is? The music it brings out emotions from us and the crowd.

Do you ever play cover songs? We have in the past, currently we've haven't been, although we've revised an old church hymn called "Found the Answer".

Best and worst things about being in a band? The best thing is interacting with the crowd, just seeing the emotions&reactions. The worst thing those practices when you just aren't in the mood or right mindset.

Anything people should know about the band? We're all still single ladies!!!

What 5 cds do you think everybody needs to hear? #1)Are you Experienced-Jimi Hendrix,#2)the original soundtrack-Soulfood 76,#3)stavesacre-the first one,I can't think of the title,#4)Facelift-Alice in Chains,#5)100 million eyeballs-Miss Angie

Do you have any cds, demos, etc., out? We have some 4-track recordings, but we plan VERY SOON to get a good demo out !!!

How can people contact you for merch and stuff? They can visit our website here.

Any final comments? It was pleasure doing the interview, thanks so much for your time. Keep up the great work and God bless!!!
