"Everybody Makes Mistakes"
Starflyer 59

I fell in love with this album as soon as I heard the first riff. Jason Martin's genius has reached its peak in this disc. Experimenting with all sorts of intrumentation, SF59 has taken rock to a completely different level. "Play the C Chord" has an edgy guitar sound and fills into a field of steel and acoustic guitars. The steel guitar gives the song a slight country feel without being corny and it's somehow just perfect for the song. "No New Kinda Story" starts with a synth-orchestra and introduces a quirky melody with some electronic rhythms humming the background. Jason's soothing voice fills the air amist all these things and it makes you want to drive your car late at night on a deserted country road. My favorite song on the CD is also one of the shortest. With a basic piano melody and synths, "20 Dollar Bills" leaves you at peace even when the low fuzz of the guitar comes from behind the piano. Rock-n-roll is at its best with songs like "No More Shows" and "A Dethroned King" with their pounding guitar lines and solid drumming. "Just Try" offers a slow psychadelic state of mind and "My Name" is just a fun song to listen to with its hints of Americana (the red album). Jason Martin is an incredible songwriter and his passion flows into the concluding track, "The Party," which brings back the simple piano sound with a flowing guitar aura. Finally, the secret track features a guest saxophonist proving that SF59 would make a great jazz/blues band. This is the kind of record that inspires musicians to be original and I hope that Jason will continue creating these masterpieces.
