"Holding Hands @ 35,000 ft"
Denison Marrs
This is the dreamiest space-rock I've ever heard. While many would throw
this band into the emo/indie-rock umbrella, I would have to very much
disagree. Though Eric Collin's voice (who right now is one of my favorite
vocalists) is very soft and whispering, it is by means "emo." I especially
love it when he puts all his energy into his voice. I e-mailed Eric a little
while ago and wanted to say thanks for the concert they did for us in
Atlanta. I bought the CD at the concert and I told him in the e-mail that I
really appreciated his lyrics. They're so worshipful. "All the planets and
their moons recgonize your beauty and bow to you/ every star and all their
light shine your love down on me tonight" ("Every Star"). He responded by
saying that those lyrics are what God inspired him to write so that others
could worship in that fashion. The guitar work on the disc is just
outstanding. Dan's guitar pedal system is just mind-blowing and it's cool to
see him use it. Lots of effects with reverb, chorus, sustain, delay, and
distortion to realize that dreamy space-rock sound. There is even a hint to
Denison Marrs' past as Divine Child as they remake "Heavy Laden" (which was
originally on their Divine Child 6-song EP, Every Seven Minutes). But I must
say, I prefer the orignal. :) The last track played live ("@ 35,00 ft") is
just amazing. The guitar solo is completely rocked out while Eric and Joe
(bass) let their guitars hum. Awesome.
